Language Learning Card Games are available in different
languages, such as Spanish, French, and German, and each set
includes:
The
sets are designed as learning tools to help children and adults acquire a
second language through both audio and visual methods. Popular
card games help to reinforce foreign language words,
phrases, and sentences.
The
sets can be used in a variety of ways. Children can listen
to the audio CD to hear the pronunciation of the cards. The
cards can serve as flash cards, and can be rearranged to
form many different sentences. Kids can play card games
either alone or with others, so that they learn as they
play.
Each
package comes with two decks of cards. The Family series
cards feature everyday word usage, and the Travel series
cards feature phrases and sentences most commonly used while
traveling.
The
cards are both numbered and color-coded. For example, in the
German edition, the set of three cards numbered 3 in the
Family series are: a red card with the phrase "I'm going
to" and its German equivalent, "Ich werde"; a
white card that reads "read a book" or "ein Buch
lesen" in German; a blue card that reads, "at three
fifteen", or "um drei Uhr funfzehn".
The
resulting phrase is: "I'm
going to read a book at three fifteen." The English version should be read in the order of
red, white, then
blue cards to form a sentence. In German, however, it is
read in this order: red, blue, then white.
The
cards can be rearranged to form many other sentences. Instead of
"at three fifteen", one could use
"tomorrow" or "this morning", for
example. Instead of "I'm going to", kids can add
the phrase "I'd rather", and so forth
Instructions
for card games are given. Go Fish is the most basic game,
and is the only one that concentrates simply on number
learning. The rest of the games involve reading and speaking
the phrases and sentences on the cards. The game of Solitaire involves attempting to form
sentences from face-up cards, filling in the spaces with
face-down cards, and going as far as possible.
Crazy Colors plays much like Crazy Eights. The other
suggested games include Concentration, Gin Rummy, and War.
Phonetic guides
are included on each card, serving as
pronunciation reminders.
These
sets are ingenious. Both kids and adults will benefit from
this "edutaining" approach to learning a second
language!
