The Backstreet Boys are coming to
Arthur's hometown, Elwood City in 4
weeks, 6 days, and 57 minutes. But who's counting? Muffy is! In
fact, she's got quite a crush on Nick Carter. Francine, on the
other hand, thinks the Backstreet Boys are "sell-outs",
and she's bent on proving that if she had a rock band, she would
never sell out.
Arthur It's Only
Rock n Roll is a brand new video that features animated
versions of the Backstreet Boys--as bears and rabbits, complete
with animal ears! It offers kids a taste of the music business,
too. Francine forms a band--she holds auditions, and then
rehearsals, and she lays down the law--her law, of course!
"We don't care about fame or money or stuff like that,"
she asserts. Her band's unlikely lead singer is the usually
painfully shy and retiring Fern, and the band, called U Stink, turns out to be an
overnight sensation. It doesn't take long before all the fame goes
to the band members' heads, and their opinionated leader quits,
only to be replaced by a digital drum.
Arthur and
Buster tend to be on the sidelines in this video--the pair tries
to put together their own band, rather unsuccessfully. There are
some humorous fantasy sequences included, and our favorite is
Muffy's fantasy of becoming manager of the Backstreet Boys. In it,
Nick sings a song dedicated to her and her superior managing
skills, with lyrics like "How would I manage without
you?" and "The manager of my dreams".
This fun
video not only features animated versions of
the Backstreet Boys sporting animal ears à la Arthur, viewers
also get treated to two
exclusive songs performed by the "boys" themselves! Both
the DVD and VHS editions include the bonus featurette, The Making
of It's Only Rock n Roll, which features behind-the-scenes footage
of the Backstreet Boys singing and voice-acting for the video.
They do their own version of the Arthur theme song. Marc Brown,
the author and illustrator of the Arthur book series, talks about
the making of the video and gives children a peek at some of his
artwork at the work-in-progress stage.
The bonus
featurette is not only enjoyable, it is very informative for young
viewers.
