With
such beautiful recordings as African Playground and Dreamland
under their belt, Putumayo World Music have established
themselves as first-rate international music publishers. Although
designed primarily for kids, Putumayo Presents recordings
are as parent-friendly as they are kid-friendly. Their latest release, Putumayo Presents
Christmas Around the World, offers classic Christmas songs
with an international twist.
What better
time of year to open children’s minds (and ears) to the music of
cultures around the world than Christmas? Although families will recognize most
of the songs on the recording, the styles of each song are
fresh—a rousing Haitian troubadour-style “Joyeux Noel”,
“White Christmas” performed by Los Reyes representing France
and done in a rumba flamenco style, and Ramon F. Veloz brings a
Cuban-Spanish guajira dance style to “Joy to the World” (“
Paz en la Tierra”), and “Silent Night” (“Douce Nuit”)
features an unusual and gorgeous combination of banjo and steel
drums, for example. Although most songs are popular Christmas
melodies, the recording contains a few traditional songs specific
to particular regions, such as “Aguinaldo Jibaro”, a Puerto
Rican classic Christmas celebration song. USA is represented with
two tracks, “Here We Come A-Wassailing” and “What Child is
This”.
This
multilingual offering is distinctive, warm, and inspirational—a
delightful addition to any family’s music collection.
