classic P.D. Eastman story is just right for budding readers who
have grown out of their Bob Books. In fact, it is a wonderful
read-aloud for preschoolers too. As an early reader, there are few
books better than this one. It features the repetition of key
phrases, and a mix of easy words like "dog" and
"big" and common sight words that make beginner readers
topnotch. Best of all, it is a delightful, multi-topic story that
is filled with humor, a bit of whimsy, and plenty of activity (as
the title suggests).
Plenty of colorful dogs demonstrate important
early learning concepts "It is hot here in the sun"
and "It is not hot here under the house". A running
story line, in which two dogs meet and one asks if the other likes
her hat, is arguably the one most likely to bring a smile to a
young child's face. Kids love it when the red dog frankly answers,
"I do not like that hat", and are delighted when he
finally does like the other dog's hat choice.
Many parents of young children today have read this book when
they were young, and are not surprised it is still around for
their own kids to enjoy.
The hardback is approximately $7 US.
- Humorous story that is
simple, yet multi-layered.
- Great for both reading
aloud and early independent reading attempts.
