Spongebob Squarepants

"Oh, who lives in a pineapple under the sea? Spongebob Squarepants! Absorbent and yellow and porous is he! Spongebob Squarepants!"

There's no arguing the popularity of Spongebob Squarepants with kids, and I know quite a few adults who love to watch—and discuss—the Nickelodeon cartoon.

This square, yellow sea sponge lives in the undersea city of Bikini Bottom, in a pineapple, along with his pet snail. He works as a fry cook at Krusty Krab, and his supremely naive, enthusiastic personality should be annoying but is as endearing as can be to viewers.

Spongebob Squarepants is quite the "square", and he's also quite the sensation! In fact, he now stars in a full-length animated feature film, The Spongebob SquarePants Movie.

Spongebob Squarepants The Movie

SpongeBob Squarepants the Movie had mixed reactions amongst our reviewers. Some kids (older ones) came out of the movie completely satisfied, and others couldn't quite hide some level of disappointment. The story begins with the grand opening of Mr. Krab's second restaurant, the Krusty Krab 2. SpongeBob has hyped himself for the position, and is so confident that he will be named the manager of the new restaurant, that he accepts the position in spite of the announcement that his co-worker is the one who is promoted. Because the bubble Spongebob has created around himself is thick, it takes some time to burst, but once it does, he is one dejected sponge. It seems that he is not "man" enough for the job.

In the meantime, Plankton is scheming to get his stubby little hands on Mr. Krab's formula for the successful Krabby Patty. Soon, Evil Plan "Z" is in motion, King Neptune's precious crown is stolen, and Mr. Krabs is framed for the crime. Despite Spongebob's supreme disappointment with his boss, he embarks on a quest for the crown along with his dopey but lovable friend Patrick. Are they "man" enough? After some downright surreal twists and turns in the adventure, SpongeBob and Patrick learn to take pride in their childlike qualities and save the day at the same time.

The movie is certainly more dramatic than the TV cartoon. Much of the humor of the show is present in the movie, such as its unabashed delight in "bottoms" (underpants and bums), although it is decidedly more surreal and seemed to cross "the line" at times. Our parent reviewers had mixed reactions, laughing out loud at certain points, and other times wrinkling their brows at each other (SpongeBob and Patrick intoxicated on ice cream and Patrick in fishnet stockings and were two of those moments). Some wished that the movie tried harder to entertain younger fans of the show rather than teenage and adult fans.

Spongebob Squarepants Games

coverOur favorite Spongebob CD-ROM is Spongebob Squarepants: Employee of the Month. Never mind that SpongeBob SquarePants is Employee of the Month for the 27th consecutive time, the honor is still cause to celebrate. In fact, he has won tickets to Neptune's Paradise, an underwater amusement park. The problem is getting there, and that sets up the goal of this fun, adventure-style computer game. The game is not easy-easy or hard-hard. It's just right in terms of challenge for kids ages 5-8. We had a blast with this game.

Our full review of the game appears here: Spongebob Squarepants Employee of the Month CD-ROM Review, Kids lead Spongebob on his journey to Neptune's Paradise, and the game is broken up into chapters. In order to get to the amusement park, players have to collect items in their inventory and use them at appropriate times. For example, a customer at the Krusty Krab has a clue as to where Spongebob should go next, but he will only dish out his tip if Spongebob dishes him out a Krabby Patty. This involves collecting both the patty and a plate, and the latter item is in need of some cleaning. Likewise, getting one's hands on a pie is a bit of work--SpongeBob needs to clean Eugene's car in order to earn urchin chips for Granny.

coverBest Value: This CD-ROM is now bundled along with another SpongeBob game in SpongeBob SquarePants: Krusty Kollection. This bundle includes Spongebob Squarepants: Employee of the Month and Operation Krabby Patty — two full CD-ROMs.

The Spongebob Movie for the PC is at times tedious (a lot of walking around to do!) and puzzling, but it's brimming with humor and it offers kids a treasure hunt-style adventure game (it is NOT a platformer game). See our full review of the game here, more pictures from the game here, and game hints and tips here (only if you need help!).
